Transition Report 2007 - People in Transition
This year's Transition Report takes an in-depth look at how life in eastern Europe has changed since the collapse of communism. Drawing on a survey of 29,000 people across 29 countries, the Report analyses how the transition to market economies and democracy has affected the lives of ordinary citizens across the region.
In particular, the Report looks at why attitudes to economic and political transition vary so much and how factors such as age, education and employment affect people’s views. It also highlights the types of policy changes that might be needed to improve public attitudes.
The Report focuses especially on the delivery of public services, such as education, health care and basic infrastructure. It looks at the main ways of providing these services and at how to address public dissatisfaction. Schemes such as public-private partnerships, voluntary participation and full-scale privatisation are analysed to highlight the benefits and risks of each approach.
